Proscar is a prodrug of sildenafil citrate, used to treat male pattern baldness, and is structurally related to human androgens. It has a high degree of potency and specificity. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of finasteride (1 mg/mL) in combination with finasteride-containing tablets in the treatment of male pattern baldness.
A total of 20 patients with male pattern baldness who were treated with finasteride (1 mg/mL) in combination with finasteride-containing tablets (2.5 mg/mL) for 5 years were included in this prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 1 mg/day finasteride or placebo tablets. Patients were evaluated using a comprehensive photographic assessment, including hair loss, scalp coverage, and hair density. The primary outcome was the percentage of patients who reported at least one hair loss. Secondary outcomes included the percentage of patients who reported hair loss in the scalp at the time of treatment, hair density, and the hairline recession at the time of treatment. The results showed that the combined use of finasteride with finasteride-containing tablets was more effective than the placebo in the treatment of male pattern baldness.
The mean age of the study population was 52.1 ± 6.6 years. Of the 20 patients, 10 (83.3%) were male and 9 (82.3%) were female. Of the 10 patients with male pattern baldness, 6 (27.4%) were Caucasian, and 5 (25.6%) were Asian. The mean age of the patients was 53.2 ± 6.4 years, while the mean hair loss was 2.8 cm/year. The mean duration of hair loss was 4.8 years. The mean number of hair regrowth at the time of treatment was 3.4 ± 1.9. The mean percentage of patients who reported at least one hair loss in the scalp at the time of treatment was 11.1%.
ConclusionThis study suggests that the use of finasteride, in combination with finasteride-containing tablets, may be a useful treatment for male pattern baldness.
